A United States lawmaker, Mary Miller, has alleged that radical Islam is responsible for the killing of thousands of Christians in Nigeria, as pressure mounts on the Nigerian government over worsening insecurity and sectarian violence.
In a post on X, Miller wrote: “Radical Islam is responsible for the mass slaughter of THOUSANDS of Christians in Nigeria and around the world,” adding that the ideology “has no place in America.”
Her comments come amid growing scrutiny by U.S. lawmakers over what some American officials have described as a genocide against Christians in parts of Nigeria, particularly in the North-East and Middle Belt regions.
Earlier, the United States House Committee on Appropriations signalled that Washington could take action over alleged religious persecution in Nigeria. The committee made this known while responding to a post by Congressman Riley Moore, who recently visited Benue State and met with displaced Christian victims of violent attacks.
Moore said he visited internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Benue, where he met Christians who had been forced to flee their homes following deadly attacks. According to him, survivors shared harrowing accounts of violence, including the killing of family members and attacks on women and children.
“There are more than 600,000 Christians in IDP camps in Benue State alone,” Moore said, adding that those affected should be able to live in their ancestral homes without fear.
Responding to Moore’s post, the House Committee on Appropriations stated that the United States would not “look away as innocent lives are stolen,” noting that an on-the-ground mission had been conducted to inform a report on Christian persecution in Nigeria and guide future policy recommendations. The committee said religious freedom and atrocity prevention remain central to U.S. national security and foreign policy considerations.
Moore has also raised concerns about Nigeria’s broader security challenges. In a separate statement, he disclosed that he met with Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to discuss the escalating wave of terrorism and ongoing killings.
According to the congressman, the issue is of particular concern to U.S. President Donald Trump and American lawmakers. He said discussions with Nigerian officials focused on concrete steps that could help stabilise the country, dismantle terrorist groups in the North-East and curb attacks in the Middle Belt.
While acknowledging some progress, Moore said Nigeria’s security crisis remains far from resolved, stressing the need for sustained action and continued dialogue between both countries.
