The Ondo State security outfit, known as Amotekun, has apprehended 39 individuals suspected of terrorism who allegedly fled Sokoto State following the US airstrikes conducted on Christmas Day in Nigeria’s North-West.
While addressing the media about the broader operation that led to the arrest of the suspected criminals, Starnews NG reports that Chief Adetunji Adeleye, the commander of Amotekun, told journalists that the 39 suspects claimed to have escaped from Sokoto due to increased pressure from security forces in the northern region.
Adeleye explained that after their flight from the North, the suspects sought refuge in various forests within Ondo State. “A few days ago, we detained 39 individuals who stated that they relocated to our forests due to the intensified actions against them in the northern part of the country,” he noted.
He added that the profiling of these suspects is ongoing, indicating that those found with incriminating evidence would face prosecution. “We are currently assessing their backgrounds, and those with suspicious materials will definitely be prosecuted,” he stated.
Emphasizing the government’s stance, Adeleye mentioned that anyone wishing to reside in forested areas of Ondo State must obtain the necessary permits. He expressed concern over the sudden influx of these individuals, saying, “This unexpected arrival raises several questions that we are actively investigating.”
Adeleye also highlighted the effectiveness of collaborative border patrols between Ekiti/Ondo, Osun/Ondo, and Ogun/Ondo, noting that these efforts have led to successful operations, including suspects who have yet to be presented as their investigations are still underway. “We have even traveled to Ogun State to bring back suspects who are part of our ongoing inquiries,” he added.
