Urgent Appeal to Bunmi Tunji-Ojo Regarding Driver’s License Delays

Dear Hon. Bunmi Tunji-Ojo,

I am writing to you as the Minister of Interior in Nigeria to draw your attention to the ongoing delays in the processing and issuance of driver’s licenses by the Federal Road Safety Corps. Many individuals who have applied for new licenses or renewals are experiencing frustrating wait times that far exceed the usual one-month period, with some waiting over six months.

This issue has led to widespread dissatisfaction among Nigerians who are eager to obtain their driver’s licenses. As of now, the reasons for these delays remain unclear. A representative from the Ibadan office noted that only the headquarters in Abuja could provide a definitive explanation for the situation.

Our investigation at Starnews NG has uncovered that these backlogs have been accumulating since early 2023, a development that has largely gone unnoticed by the public. It is worth mentioning that a similar crisis previously affected the issuance of international passports until your intervention brought about significant reforms at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), effectively resolving that backlog.

Based on our findings, we can report that applicants are now waiting between 5 to 7 months for their driver’s licenses, which are meant to meet international standards. Many individuals have expressed their frustration over the inconvenience this delay has caused in their daily lives.

We urge you to look into this matter and take the necessary steps to resolve it, just as you did with the passport issuance process. Your prompt attention to this issue would be greatly appreciated by countless Nigerians who are currently affected.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Olumide Akinrinlola,
