In a bid to bolster Nigeria’s healthcare sector and address the dearth of medical professionals, the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Ondo, has sealed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Wesley University, Ondo.
The MoU entails collaborative efforts in providing clinical extern postings for specific categories of medical students and Allied Health programs. Acting Chief Medical Director of UNIMEDTH, Dr. Michael Gbala, hailed the partnership as a significant step towards combating the country’s “Japa Syndrome” and enhancing healthcare delivery.
Rt. Rev. Prof. Obeka Samuel Sunday (JP), Vice-Chancellor of Wesley University, lauded the amiable approach of UNIMEDTH’s management, foreseeing the collaboration as a catalyst for advancing health-related programs.
AHe emphasized the potential for skill exchange to alleviate the shortage of healthcare professionals in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.
Highlighting the benefits, Prof. Sunday noted an expected surge in student enrollment, facilitated by the institutions’ proximity and UNIMEDTH’s superior resources. Dr. Ayodeji Akinbodewa, Acting Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, echoed optimism, foreseeing an influx of well-trained medical professionals to benefit society.
The collaboration promises not only to cultivate competent medical graduates but also to foster a conducive environment for policy formulation and implementation, as emphasized by Dr. Akinbodewa.
