Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Nigeria’s minister of interior, has linked the recent prison break in Koton Karfe, Kogi state, to the carelessness of some officers on duty.
The incident, which led to the escape of 12 inmates from the federal correctional facility, occurred on Monday morning.
Reacting to the development, Kingsley Fanwo, Kogi state’s commissioner for information, initially confirmed the escape of the prisoners.
Tunji-Ojo swiftly ordered an investigation to uncover the cause and ensure the swift return of the escapees.
He assured the public that the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) would rely on advanced biometric tracking systems to find the fugitives.
Following this effort, the NCoS announced that five of the inmates had been recaptured shortly after the escape.
Tunji-Ojo later provided an update during a televised discussion, stating that seven of the escapees were back in custody.
He dismissed claims of a physical attack on the facility, explaining that the escape was due to internal negligence rather than an external breach.
The minister maintained that the prison had been fortified under the current administration, with solid perimeter fencing and modern security upgrades.
He also noted that security officers from other agencies were assisting in the search for the remaining escapees.
