Tribunal Throws Out Action Alliance’s Case Against Governor Okpebholo

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed a case brought by the Action Alliance (AA) challenging the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 21, 2024, election.

The tribunal, made up of three judges and led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, ruled against the claims presented by the opposition party on Tuesday.

During the hearing, AA’s lawyer, Adewale Adebayo, urged the tribunal to consider the arguments presented and rule in favor of the party.

The petition alleged irregularities, particularly over-voting, and called for a review of the election results.

In response, APC’s legal team dismissed the accusations, insisting that AA had not provided enough proof.

They argued that proving over-voting required testimony from polling unit agents and eyewitnesses, which the petitioner failed to produce.

The defense further stated that the case lacked substance and urged the tribunal to throw it out.

After reviewing the arguments, the tribunal ruled in favour of APC, stating that AA failed to present enough evidence to back its claims.

The court also pointed out that only a candidate who participated in the election has the right to challenge the results.

Since AA’s candidate did not contest the election, the tribunal concluded that the party had no legal grounds to file the case.
