President Bola Tinubu has met with the Asagba of Asaba, Obi Professor Epiphany Azinge, SAN, and other traditional rulers at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The meeting took place as concerns grow over the political situation in Rivers State following the recent declaration of a state of emergency.
The visit comes after President Tinubu suspended Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months. In their place, he appointed former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, as the sole administrator of the state.
Although the details of the discussions between the President and the monarchs were not made public, the timing suggests it may be related to the ongoing crisis in the South-South region. Prof. Azinge, who became the 14th Asagba of Asaba on August 26, 2024, was accompanied by members of the Obi-in-Council during the visit.
Tensions have been rising in some parts of the South-South, with reactions continuing to trail the President’s decision. The meeting with the traditional rulers is seen as part of efforts to engage key stakeholders amid the unfolding situation.
