President Bola Tinubu has applauded Nigeria’s Super Falcons for clinching the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, celebrating their 3-2 win over Morocco as a proud moment for the country and a significant achievement for Africa.
In a post-match video call to the jubilant team inside their dressing room in Rabat, the President congratulated the players and coaching staff on securing Nigeria’s historic 10th WAFCON title.
“We are very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you. You lifted the trophy and we are all very, very happy,” the President told the jubilant players. “You will be celebrated, and I congratulate all the coaches and the management of the team—including the ministers and officials.”
During the call, President Tinubu extended special commendations to players Esther, Shade, and Jennifer, and lauded Rasheedat Ajibade’s decisive penalty, describing it as “a very courageous exercise.”
“Your victory means a lot for the country and the continent as a whole,” he added. “Safe journey home, enjoy yourselves, avoid injuries, and God bless you.”
Present with the President during the call were key government officials, including his Senior Special Assistant on Digital Communications, O’tega Ogra; Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; Minister of Tourism and Culture, Hannatu Musa Musawa; and Minister of State for Finance, Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite.
Responding on behalf of the team, captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who was also named Player of the Match, expressed appreciation for the payment of their full allowances and pledged to personally present the trophy to the President.
“I’m looking forward to that,” the President replied.
