Tinubu Approves Retirement Age Extension, Salary Arrears Payment for Healthcare Workers

President Bola Tinubu has approved an extension of the retirement age for medical doctors and other healthcare professionals in Nigeria, raising it from 60 to 65 years.

According to Afripost, this announcement was made on Wednesday by Dr. Mannir Bature, the National Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

In addition to the retirement age extension, President Tinubu has authorized the release of funds to address pending salary arrears for healthcare workers.

Prof. Muhammad Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, has been tasked with formally submitting the approval to the Council on Establishment through the Head of Service for final endorsement.

Bature shared that Prof. Pate discussed these policy changes with NMA President Prof. Bala Audu and other relevant health sector stakeholders during an important meeting.

He further stated that payments related to the revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) would be processed soon.

Moreover, President Tinubu has approved adjustments to both CONMESS and the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) to reflect the effects of the newly implemented minimum wage.

“The necessary funds are in place, and the disbursement process is already underway,” Bature confirmed, emphasizing that this move will provide significant financial relief to healthcare professionals, including members of the Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners and Nurses (ANPMPN), while fostering long-term sustainability for Nigeria’s healthcare system.
