President Bola Tinubu has ordered the creation of a new forest guard unit to help fight terrorism, kidnapping, and other crimes taking place in Nigeria’s forests.
This decision, made public on Wednesday, aims to protect the country’s 1,129 forest reserves, which have become hiding places for armed criminals.
The new security unit will be made up of young Nigerians who will be trained and armed to handle the job.
They will focus on finding and removing criminals who use forests as cover for their operations.
The recruitment of personnel has already begun and is being handled by both the federal and state governments.
The Office of the National Security Adviser and the Federal Ministry of Environment have been given the responsibility to oversee the entire operation.
These two bodies are expected to work together to ensure that the new security team becomes fully active and effective.
This move is part of the government’s broader efforts to improve safety across Nigeria, especially in remote areas where criminal groups have been operating freely.
The president had earlier made it known that he would not allow any part of the country to remain under the control of criminals.
He also said that the government would reclaim all forest lands and ensure peace is restored in affected areas.
Thousands of jobs will be created through this recruitment, giving young people a chance to join the fight against insecurity while also reducing unemployment.
The forest guard unit is expected to play a key role in keeping the country’s forests safe and supporting the wider campaign against banditry and terrorism.
