Nigerian TikToker Olumide Ogunsanwo, popularly known as Seaking, has shared a compelling account of his experience in Kirikiri prison, drawing attention to the challenges faced by inmates with limited access to justice.
According to Vanguard, in a video recently posted online, Seaking pointed out that many of those in Kirikiri are individuals from underprivileged backgrounds who cannot afford proper legal defense. He recounted a particularly unsettling case involving two inmates who have been behind bars since 1999 over a stolen generator.
Seaking explained that one of the men was accused of stealing the generator, while the other was arrested for purchasing it. Speaking in Pidgin English, he remarked, “There is someone inside Kirikiri said to have stolen a generator. Him and the person he sold it to have been in Kirikiri since 1999. Calculate the years.”
Expressing his disbelief, he questioned why the buyer of the stolen item had been incarcerated for over two decades. “Why is it that the person who used his money to buy the stolen generator has been in prison since 1999?” he asked.
The TikToker went on to criticize the justice system, emphasizing the socioeconomic imbalance among inmates. According to him, the prison is filled with people who lack the resources to fight their cases. “When I was there, all I saw were poor and voiceless individuals,” he lamented.
Seaking’s revelation has sparked discussions about the urgent need for reforms in Nigeria’s justice system, particularly concerning prolonged detentions and equitable access to legal representation for disadvantaged individuals.
