A fire triggered by a thunderstorm on Sunday ravaged five classroom blocks at Saint Peter’s Primary School in Igbemo Ekiti, forcing the relocation of pupils to AUD Pilot Nursery and Primary School to ensure the continuation of their education.
The fire erupted during a heavy downpour that lasted over an hour, leaving the school building badly damaged. Fortunately, since the incident occurred outside school hours, no casualties were recorded.
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, represented by Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, visited the site on Monday and assured the community of the government’s swift intervention to rebuild the affected structures.
“I am deeply saddened by the fire incident caused by a thunder strike, but we are grateful that no lives were lost. The prompt relocation of the pupils reflects the commitment of the State Universal Basic Education Board to their academic progress,” the governor stated.
He further promised that the damaged classrooms would be reconstructed soon to enable students and teachers to return to their original learning environment.
During the visit, the governor also instructed authorities to put an end to open defecation and waste disposal at the temporary school premises after teachers raised concerns over potential health hazards.
Mrs. Adesola George-Ojo, Education Secretary for Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government, stressed the importance of completing the school’s perimeter fencing to prevent further environmental risks.
