Three people lost their lives and 21 others got injured on Thursday morning during a cash aid distribution at Kasugula Primary School in Bama local government area of Borno state.
The stampede happened around 8am when a large crowd gathered to receive financial support of N28,500 each.
The distribution was organized by the Nigerian Red Cross Society in partnership with the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The crowd became uncontrollable as people rushed toward the school gate, causing panic and chaos.
Among those hurt were women and elderly individuals who had waited to collect the aid.
Some of the injured included Amina Mohammed, Fatima Bukar, Fatima Abatcha, and Yagana Ibrahim.
They were taken to nearby health centres for treatment.
One of the victims, a 60-year-old man from Bukar Tela ward, died before receiving medical attention.
The other two passed away during treatment.
Security officers were sent to the area to calm the situation, and normalcy was restored shortly after.
The bodies of those who died have been handed over to their families for burial, while the injured are still receiving care.
