Tensions are increasing in Kano after two different Emirs appointed separate candidates for the position of Galadiman Kano, following the recent passing of Alhaji Abbas Sanusi.
This move has intensified the ongoing power struggle in the Emirate, further dividing the traditional institution.
The Kano Emirate Council, led by Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, officially announced Sanusi Ado Bayero as the new Galadiman Kano.
A letter issued on April 21, 2025, confirmed this appointment, promoting him from Wamban Kano to the prestigious role.
The letter explained that Emir Aminu’s decision was based on Sanusi Ado Bayero’s loyalty and service.
A formal ceremony to crown him will take place on May 2, 2025, at the Emir’s palace in Nasarawa Royal House.
Meanwhile, the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, appointed Alhaji Mannir Sanusi, the District Head of Bichi, to the same position on April 8, 2025.
Mannir Sanusi expressed his acceptance of the role with humility and a commitment to serve. Sources close to Sanusi II revealed that this decision was made to uphold the Emirate’s historical values amid the current leadership struggles.
These competing appointments come just weeks after the death of Abbas Sanusi, the previous holder of the title.
