Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has firmly dismissed allegations linking him and his administration to the protection of armed herdsmen accused of carrying out deadly attacks in Benue State.
Addressing the media on Wednesday in Lafia, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Addra, described the claims as unfounded and damaging. He specifically condemned a viral video featuring Professor Zachary Anger Gundu, a former Pro-Chancellor of Benue State University, in which the academic accused Governor Sule of supporting the violent activities of herdsmen and allegedly handing over Tiv farmlands to them.
Addra stated that such accusations are deeply regrettable and unacceptable, especially considering the seriousness of the security issues involved.
“We are compelled to respond to the spate of allegations directed at Governor Sule and the government of Nasarawa State by some notable individuals from Benue. The statements made by Prof. Gundu are not only false but highly irresponsible,” Addra said.
He noted that Governor Sule, who also serves as the Chairman of the North-Central Governors Forum, has consistently expressed concern over the loss of lives in Benue and across the region, and has stood in solidarity with affected communities.
Addra also revealed that the governor is considering legal action should the accusations not be withdrawn and a public apology issued by the individuals involved.
“We challenge Prof. Gundu to present clear, verifiable evidence of the alleged harbouring of criminals in Nasarawa. If he fails to do so, Governor Sule will take appropriate legal measures to protect his name and office,” he warned.
He further maintained that Nasarawa State remains committed to peaceful coexistence and regional stability, and condemned attempts to politicize or misrepresent the state’s position in the ongoing security challenges affecting parts of the North-Central region.
