Students Protest Renaming of Ibadan Polytechnic

Students of The Polytechnic Ibadan took to the streets on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, to protest the decision of the Oyo State Government to rename the institution after a former governor, Dr. Omololu Olunloyo.

The protest took place at the state government secretariat in Ibadan.

The students, carrying placards with various messages, called on Governor Seyi Makinde to reverse the decision.

They demanded that the original name of the institution be maintained, arguing that the school’s identity, built over many years, should not be changed.

The protest followed the announcement made by Governor Makinde on Thursday, June 26, during the funeral service of Dr. Olunloyo at Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan.

The governor had declared that the school would now be called Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan.

Dr. Olunloyo, who died on April 6, 2025, was the first principal of The Polytechnic Ibadan and also served briefly as governor of Oyo State from October to December 1983.

The students believe that while the late Olunloyo contributed to the development of the institution, renaming it was not the right way to honour him.

They urged the governor to find another way to preserve his legacy without altering the school’s name.
