A 16-year-old boy named Mustapha was fatally struck by a stray bullet during a violent outbreak on Monday in the Oyingbo area of Ebute Metta, Lagos State.
The tragic event reportedly unfolded shortly after a peace rally organized by local youths to raise awareness against cult violence in the community. The gathering, intended to promote unity and nonviolence, took a deadly turn when a dispute broke out among some participants.
A local resident, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, revealed that the disagreement escalated, prompting a suspected cult member to open fire. One of the bullets allegedly hit Mustapha, who was not involved in the conflict.
“Mustapha wasn’t part of any group. He was just there to support the walk. He was a quiet and well-behaved boy,” the resident said. “They tried rushing him to the hospital, but sadly, he passed away on the way.”
The unexpected violence caused widespread panic, cutting the event short and leaving many residents in shock.
Another individual involved in organizing the peace walk was also shot and is currently reported to be in critical condition.
Attempts to reach the Lagos State Police spokesperson for comments were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages went unanswered at the time of this report.
This incident comes just a day after residents of the Idimu area were shaken by the discovery of two lifeless bodies, including one that had been decapitated, in what is believed to be another cult-related attack.
