Sowore slams UN over Venezuela crisis, says global body has failed humanity

By Charles Maduka

Nigerian human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has strongly criticised the United Nations, describing it as weak, compromised and no longer relevant, following what he called an illegal regime-change action by the United States in Venezuela.

Sowore made the statement on his X account while reacting to reports surrounding U.S. military action in Venezuela and claims that President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were seized during the operation. He accused U.S. President Donald Trump of pursuing an unlawful agenda aimed at forcefully removing the Venezuelan government.

According to Sowore, the situation in Venezuela has once again exposed the inability of the United Nations to restrain powerful countries from acting unilaterally. He said the UN has failed to stop wars, aggression and abuses of power, arguing that the organisation has been reduced to what he called a “ceremonial tea party.”

He further stated that any global institution that cannot protect humanity from the “ego, bloodlust and unchecked ambition” of powerful leaders has lost its legitimacy. Sowore said the UN has consistently failed to live up to its responsibility of maintaining global peace and justice.

The activist went on to call for the complete dissolution of the United Nations, urging the global community to replace it with a new and credible coalition of nations. According to him, such a body should genuinely serve humanity, uphold justice and prevent tyranny rather than legitimising it.

The comments come amid intense international debate over U.S. actions in Venezuela, with global powers divided over the legality and consequences of military intervention and foreign involvement in the country’s political crisis.

Sowore’s remarks have sparked fresh conversations online about the future of international institutions and whether the United Nations is still capable of enforcing global order in a world dominated by powerful states.
