Sowore Seeks Jonathan’s Support for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

Human rights activist and political leader Omoyele Sowore has met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja to seek his support for the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

During the meeting, Sowore discussed the urgency of addressing Kanu’s case fairly and decisively. Jonathan reportedly acknowledged the matter and assured that he would meet with President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deliberate on the issue as soon as possible.

With this engagement, Jonathan joins a growing list of Nigerians advocating for Kanu’s release, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, human rights lawyer Femi Falana SAN, Senator Shehu Sani, and others across political and regional lines.

Kanu remains in detention due to his activism against what he describes as the long-standing marginalisation of certain groups in Nigeria. Observers note that other ethnic and regional activists facing politically motivated charges have had their cases withdrawn or dismissed, prompting calls for Kanu’s release without further delay.

Sowore also appealed to political, cultural, ethnic, and religious leaders nationwide to lend their voices to the campaign for justice. He specifically mentioned South East leaders, including Peter Obi, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, Alex C. Otti, Francis Nwifuru, Peter Mbah, Hope Uzodinma, Obiageli Ezekwesili, and John Mbata of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, as well as Nigerians of conscience across the country.

The activist reiterated his commitment to peacefully mobilising for Kanu’s freedom, insisting that the detained leader should be released promptly.
