Former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, has called for the cancellation of four major government education bodies — JAMB, NYSC, TETFund, and NELFUND — following issues that affected this year’s UTME results.
He made the call after the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) admitted to mistakes in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination that impacted thousands of candidates.
Sowore expressed his view through a post on his social media page, describing the agencies as wasteful and unhelpful.
His comment followed public outcry over the poor performance of students in the recent UTME and the examination body’s admission that there were errors in its result processing.
On Wednesday JAMB’s registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, explained during a press briefing in Abuja that the board had discovered some mistakes that contributed to the poor scores recorded by many students.
The exam, which is required for admission into Nigerian universities and other higher institutions, tests candidates in four subjects, including English Language.
According to the statistics released, more than 1.9 million candidates sat for the exam, but only a small fraction scored above 300.
Just 4,756 candidates managed to score 320 and above, while about 12,414 scored above 300.
Meanwhile, over 1.5 million students scored below 200, which is less than half the total score of 400.
The number of those who met or crossed the usual university cut-off mark of 200 was far less than expected.
Over 980,000 candidates scored between 160 and 199, while nearly 490,000 scored between 140 and 159. A few others scored as low as below 100.
The situation has drawn concern from parents, educators, and others in the education sector.
Many are questioning the credibility of the examination and the systems in place to support students.
