A tragic incident has rocked the Wawa Cantonment in Niger State, as a soldier allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life.
The Nigerian Army confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday by its Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Stephen Nwachukwu.
According to the statement, the soldier identified as Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, serving with the 221 Battalion, reportedly committed the act on Saturday, October 11, 2025, within the cantonment.
“The tragic incident, which occurred at Wawa Cantonment, Niger State, has created tension within the barracks as residents struggle to comprehend the circumstances that led to the unfortunate event,” the statement read in part.
Nwachukwu disclosed that the bodies of the soldier and his wife were found inside their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, within the military facility.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Lance Corporal Femi had been on official duty earlier in the day before seeking permission from his superior to attend to personal matters.
“The Nigerian Army deeply regrets this unfortunate incident and commiserates with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased over the painful loss,” the statement added.
Nwachukwu further noted that the remains of the couple had been preserved while a comprehensive investigation was underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
The Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assured the public that findings from the investigation would be made public and that measures would be taken to prevent future occurrences of such tragedies.
