Shehu Sani, a former senator from Kaduna, has shared that he was close to being suspended for six months in 2018 after disclosing the allowances received by federal lawmakers.
Sani revealed this in a post on his X handle, stating that he avoided suspension due to the intervention of Bukola Saraki, who was the senate president at the time, and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.
He explained that any senator who publicly exposes sensitive details could face consequences without support from colleagues.
Back in March 2018, Sani made headlines when he disclosed that each senator received N13.5 million monthly as a running cost.
He also stated that senators got N200 million for constituency projects. His revelation drew backlash from many lawmakers, as details of their earnings are usually not made public.
His comments resurfaced amid the recent suspension of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the senator representing Kogi Central.
The senate suspended her for six months after reviewing a report from the committee on ethics, privileges, and public petitions.
Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension followed a dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio on February 20.
Later, in an interview on Arise TV, she claimed that her issues in the senate began after she rejected inappropriate advances from Akpabio.
