Senate Denies Approval of New States, Plans Special Session for Buhari

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has refuted claims circulating online that the National Assembly has approved the creation of new states.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, Akpabio addressed the matter following a point raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central). He clarified that although several proposals for state creation had been submitted to the Constitution Review Committee, none had advanced through the necessary legislative stages.

“Over 42 different requests for the creation of new states have been received, but none has gone through the full constitutional process required for approval,” he said.

Akpabio stressed that the process of state creation is demanding and involves multiple levels of legal scrutiny and legislative consideration, none of which have been completed for any of the proposals.

He urged Nigerians to disregard unofficial claims and rely only on verified announcements from the National Assembly regarding constitutional amendments or issues relating to new states. He also cautioned communities against organizing meetings or campaigns in anticipation of state approvals that do not yet exist.

Meanwhile, the Senate has announced plans to hold a special session on Wednesday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The tribute will offer lawmakers an opportunity to reflect on the former leader’s contributions to the country’s growth and development.
