The Nigerian Senate has approved a budget of N124.2 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund for the 2024 financial year.
The approval was made during a plenary session after the Senate adopted the report of its Committee on Police Affairs, presented by the committee’s Vice Chairman, Senator Yunus Akintunde.
According to Akintunde, the budget includes N1.2 billion for personnel expenses and N98.6 billion for capital projects. The funds are intended to strengthen police operations across the country through training, renovation and construction of police stations, and the upgrade of essential infrastructure.
Additional provisions in the budget cover the rehabilitation of barracks and police clinics, as well as the purchase of compressed natural gas-powered vehicles to enhance police mobility and promote environmentally sustainable practices.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed optimism that the budget would enhance national security if properly implemented. He emphasized the importance of oversight to ensure the funds are used effectively.
“The Police Trust Fund must directly improve security across Nigeria. The committee must maintain strict oversight to ensure every Kobo is accounted for and used to support the welfare and operations of the Nigeria Police,” Akpabio said.
The Nigeria Police Trust Fund was established to supplement the financial needs of the police force in areas such as training, welfare, and operations, with the goal of improving law enforcement and public safety nationwide.
