The Nigerian Senate has approved a bill to repeal and rewrite the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act.
This new legislation aims to make it mandatory for all citizens to register for a national identity card.
The proposed bill is designed to create a more efficient identity system in Nigeria that aligns with global standards and reduces costs.
Once passed into law, the bill will address current issues in the national database, helping to ensure that it is more accurate and inclusive.
The new framework will also establish a comprehensive database and a commission responsible for registering citizens and issuing identity cards.
Additionally, the Senate has approved the appointment of Dr. Bala Bello as the part-time chairman of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and confirmed the appointments of five non-executive directors.
