Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appealed to medical doctors in the state to suspend their planned three-day warning strike, which is scheduled to commence today, Monday, July 28.
The state government, through a statement issued by the Ministry of Health, acknowledged the concerns raised by the Medical Guild and assured that urgent steps are being taken to address their grievances.
The Medical Guild, which comprises doctors employed by the Lagos State Government, had announced the strike on Saturday, citing unresolved issues dating back to April.
The group alleged that the government made unauthorized deductions from their salaries without prior notice or explanation.
During a press briefing at the Guild’s secretariat, its leadership explained that several attempts at dialogue had failed, prompting the decision to embark on industrial action.
Although earlier deductions were reversed following high-level interventions, the Guild stated that fresh salary cuts were made again in July.
Among the doctors’ key demands are the immediate reversal of the recent deductions and full payment of 12 months of revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) arrears owed to honorary consultants at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).
The state government reiterated its commitment to the welfare of healthcare workers and revealed that a conciliation committee, comprising representatives from both the government and the Medical Guild, has been working to resolve the issues.
According to the statement, relevant documents submitted by the Guild are currently under review in line with existing policies and financial regulations.
“As a responsible government, we value the critical role our healthcare professionals play in delivering quality healthcare to over 20 million Lagosians,” the statement read. “We urge the Medical Guild to continue on the path of dialogue as we seek a fair and peaceful resolution.”
The government also thanked residents for their patience and assured the public that contingency plans are in place to minimize disruptions to healthcare services during the strike period.
