A group of women in Rivers State on Thursday walked out of a women’s empowerment event at the EUI Centre in Port Harcourt.
They refused to listen to Theresa Ibas, the wife of the state’s interim administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Retd.).
The event was part of the Renewed Hope Initiative, but it turned into a protest when the women began chanting for Valerie Fubara, wife of the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, to speak instead.
The women expressed their dissatisfaction with Theresa Ibas’ presence, shouting “We want Sim” as they left the hall in unison.
The protest occurred amid the political unrest that followed Governor Fubara’s suspension in March by President Bola Tinubu.
Following this, Tinubu appointed Ibas, a supporter of former Governor Nyesom Wike, as Sole Administrator.
This move caused anger among Fubara’s supporters, especially women’s groups who view the appointment as illegitimate.
As the protest continued outside the venue, the women’s anger was clear. One woman called Theresa Ibas an “impostor,” while others demanded that Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, wife of the President, address them instead, insisting they did not want a “stranger” to speak.
