The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has rejected the ongoing impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing the move as unacceptable and capable of destabilising the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the APC Spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the Rivers APC said its attention had been drawn to what it described as unfortunate developments emanating from the Rivers State House of Assembly.
While acknowledging the legislature as an independent arm of government with constitutional powers of checks and balances, the party said it would not remain silent in the face of an impeachment process targeted at an APC-led government.
The party stated that the impeachment threat appeared to be a fallout of unresolved crises that originated within the Peoples Democratic Party, warning against allowing such disputes to resurface within the APC.
The APC further noted that the impeachment move was reportedly linked to budgetary issues, stressing that during the period of emergency rule, a budget was transmitted to the National Assembly by the President and Commander-in-Chief in May 2025.
According to the party, the budget, which stood at ₦1.485 trillion, was approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and subsequently by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025.
The statement added that the budget was designed to run for one year until August 2026, noting that the governor could decide not to present a supplementary budget if satisfied with the existing appropriation. It also pointed out that the constitution allows a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year by a state governor.
The Rivers APC therefore advised members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly APC lawmakers, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilising the government led by Governor Fubara.
The party stressed that it would do everything possible to ensure that the APC-led government in Rivers State was not destabilised through internal disagreements.
It called on members of the House of Assembly, especially those elected on the platform of the APC, to immediately discontinue the impeachment process, warning that it could damage the image of the party and hinder the progress and development of the state.
