The Deputy Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Hajiya Fatima, has expressed deep concern over the increasing involvement of women in drug addiction, calling it both alarming and perplexing. She urged women to steer clear of self-medication.
Hajiya Fatima made these remarks at a one-day sensitisation workshop attended by over 200 stakeholders from across Zamfara State. The event was organised by the Zamfara State Substance Control and Human Trafficking Agency (SCHTA) in collaboration with the World Health Organization.
She noted that the growing number of women falling into drug abuse is troubling and requires urgent attention.
In presentations by Pharmacist Mukhtar and other stakeholders, the dangers of self-medication were highlighted, with an emphasis on the harmful consequences of misusing drugs.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Hon. Adamu Gummi, pledged that the House would enact legislation to strengthen the agency’s efforts in ensuring a drug-free society.
In an interview, the Executive Secretary of SCHTA, Pharmacist Ishaq Ibrahim Anka, revealed that plans are in motion to extend the sensitisation campaign to the 17 emirates, 447 wards across the state, and institutions of higher learning.
