Facts have emerged while the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, is romancing the Ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and also went to London yesterday to visit President Muhammadu Buhari.
Recall that Godswill Akpabio, Senator representing the Akwa Ibom North West District, had on Thursday met Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, and held a closed door meeting with the VP.
Just yesterday, Mr Tolu Ogunlesi, Head of Digital Communication of the Presidency, confirmed to the public through a tweet on his tweeter page that Akpabio met with president Buhari yesterday in London in company of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang.
Further investigation by Starnews revealed that Akpabio is romancing the President and the ruling party(APC) for a possible defection to the APC from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alongside some PDP Senators loyal to him on 3 conditions.
According to a highly placed source in presidency loyal to Atiku Abubakar, the 3 conditions given by Akpabio are :
The President should ask the EFCC to withdraw some corruption allegations leveled against him and some his associates or in the alternative amend some of the charges to allow judicial dispensation in their favour so that Nigerians will not suspect.
The second condition is that the president will mobilise the APC senators in his support to become the Senate President.
The third condition according to the source is that the APC will also give him and others defecting a return ticket against 2019 general election.
The source who pleaded anonymity being an appointee of President Buhari confided in Starnews that the Vice president, prof Yemi Osinbajo, cannot not close the deal, hence the need for Akpabio to travel to London in company of Senator Ita Enang upon the advice of the VP.
You will recall that the consistent romance of Akpabio with APC is coming at time there are reports that the former Akwa Ibom state governor, Akpabio, is leaving the PDP to the APC.
It was gathered that the former governor want to leverage on the defection of Senate President Bukola Saraki and other APC senators who recently dumped the APC to PDP to realise his ambition of becoming the President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
It was not yet cleared if the president conceded to Akpabio’s request in London.
