Reps Summon NCDC Boss Over Chemical Emissions in Abuja

The House of Representatives Committee on Environment has asked the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Olajide Idris, to appear before it on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

This comes after complaints about the release of chemical and gaseous substances in the Gaduwa area of the Federal Capital Territory.

The committee received a petition from residents in the affected area who are worried about the health risks linked to the emissions.

The lawmakers want the NCDC boss to explain the situation and share the centre’s findings, if any, about how the chemicals may be affecting people’s health.

According to the committee, the NCDC has a duty to protect the public from health threats.

The lawmakers are also performing their duty to keep government agencies in check through proper oversight.

They expect the NCDC Director-General to give full details about what happened, including the type and source of the emissions, and to explain what steps are being taken to prevent such an incident from happening again.

He is also expected to appear with relevant officials and documents that could help the committee understand the matter better.
