The House of Representatives has intensified scrutiny of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) following the dismissal of over 1,000 employees.
During a hearing led by the ad hoc committee, members expressed frustration with the absence of CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso, who was summoned to explain the decision.
Committee chairman Bello Kumo criticized the CBN leadership for disregarding the invitation and warned of consequences for further noncompliance.
He also expressed disappointment with the Labour and Employment Minister, Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi, for missing the session.
The meeting was rescheduled from Wednesday to accommodate the President’s budget presentation.
Despite the absences, the Federal Character Commission sent a representative, earning commendation from the committee.
Kumo cautioned that any government official who fails to attend future hearings would face strict measures under the law.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the House Dr. Tajudeen Abbas urged the committee to verify the fairness of the N50 billion severance package and assess whether the process adhered to legal standards and global practices.
Abbas noted the widespread impact of the layoffs on affected workers, their families, and the nation’s economy.
The committee pledged to continue its inquiry to ensure accountability and justice for the sacked employees.
