A group of anti-corruption activists on Tuesday gathered outside the office of the Attorney General of the Federation in Abuja to call for the prosecution of Mele Kyari, former CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
The group, known as Concerned Citizens Against Corruption, also urged for a detailed probe into the financial dealings of NNPCL during Kyari’s tenure over the past five years.
The protest, led by Comrade Kabir Matazu, expressed frustration over the lack of action since President Bola Tinubu dismissed Kyari and the entire NNPCL board on April 2, 2025.
Despite the dismissal, the activists argued that no investigation has been launched into the alleged corruption during Kyari’s time at the company.
The protesters raised concerns about the mismanagement of government-owned refineries, claiming that billions of dollars were spent on their rehabilitation without clear accountability.
They also drew attention to an outstanding debt of over $2 billion owed by NNPCL to Matrix Energy, which is being repaid through daily crude oil allocations.
Matazu criticized the handling of the situation, stating that while the removal of Kyari was praised by many, the failure to investigate the financial irregularities linked to the refinery repairs and the debt owed to Matrix Energy was troubling.
He called for a full review of all agreements made under Kyari’s leadership to understand the scale of financial losses and the actions needed to recover funds.
The group insisted that an inquiry into the transactions would reveal crucial information about how public funds were spent on the refineries’ repairs and would identify who is responsible for any mismanagement.
They urged the Attorney General to launch a judicial review of all deals made under Kyari and ensure that any identified funds are recovered.
The Concerned Citizens Against Corruption concluded their protest by demanding that the government set up a commission to investigate NNPCL’s operations under Kyari and the dismissed board.
The activists vowed to continue their campaign for accountability and transparency in Nigeria’s public institutions.
