Tension has gripped parts of Akure, the Ondo State capital, following the stabbing to death of a police officer during an altercation in the Arakale area of the city.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Ondo State Police Command dismissed viral social media reports claiming widespread attacks across Akure, describing them as misleading and aimed at causing unnecessary panic.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when a police inspector on lawful duty encountered resistance from some individuals in the area. An altercation ensued, during which the officer was stabbed.
The victim was immediately rescued and rushed to the hospital by police operatives. However, despite efforts by medical personnel, the officer succumbed to his injuries.
The Commissioner of Police subsequently ordered a swift deployment of operatives to the scene, leading to the arrest of two suspects identified as Shina Jacob (25) and Felix Olalekan (32), who are believed to be directly connected to the attack.
DSP Ayanlade explained that additional follow-up operations were carried out overnight as part of the Command’s strategy to rid the state of violent criminal elements and forestall further security breaches.
He emphasized that while the police would not condone misconduct or rights violations by any officer, the Command would also not tolerate assaults on law enforcement personnel performing their lawful duties. He assured that the arrested suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Command further cautioned the public against spreading unverified reports capable of inciting fear or disrupting public peace, noting that deliberate dissemination of false information is a criminal offense.
Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining security across Ondo State, the Command also expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police for his continued support and strategic guidance.
