Police Detain Suspect Over Alleged Defacement of Sacred Agemo Statue in Ijebu Ode

The Ogun State Police Command has taken a man into custody for allegedly defiling the sacred Agemo statue at Itoro Roundabout in Ijebu Ode.

CSP Omolola Odutola, the state police spokesperson, confirmed the development in a statement released on Sunday from Abeokuta.

The Agemo figure, an important spiritual symbol in Ijebu land, is considered one of the most respected deities in local tradition.

According to the statement, the man reportedly damaged the monument by removing its symbolic crown—an action that shocked residents and devotees alike. The crown was later retrieved and is currently being held at the Obalende Police Station for safekeeping.

Thanks to the quick response of officers, potential unrest was averted, and the area was secured to prevent further disturbance.

“The suspect is undergoing mental health evaluation, as preliminary signs point to a psychological disorder,” Odutola stated.

She also reassured citizens that normalcy has returned to Ijebu Ode, and public safety remains intact as investigations into the incident continue.
