Police Commissioner Warns Against Unlawful Bail Payments

Mr. Hayatu Usman, the Commissioner of Police (CP) in Gombe State, has issued a warning that paying or receiving money for bail is unlawful.

Addressing a news conference in Gombe, the CP emphasized that bail is free and cautioned police officers against engaging in corrupt practices by receiving money for bail from suspects. Usman stated that the command has implemented measures to ensure that no money is accepted for bail in police stations across the state.

He declared a zero-tolerance policy for corruption within the police force and highlighted that officers found guilty of engaging in corrupt practices have faced disciplinary actions, including dismissal or rank reduction. The CP urged the public not to pay if asked for money before bailing someone, encouraging them to report such incidents so that appropriate action could be taken against the involved officer.

Additionally, Usman cautioned police officers to conduct themselves professionally and avoid violating the rights of the public. He emphasized that the command would address any member of the force caught engaging in corrupt or undisciplined behavior, following established procedures.

Usman outlined his plans to strengthen community-based policing, overhaul crime prevention machinery, enhance intelligence gathering, and proactively address the rising crime rate in the state. He also urged criminals to abandon unlawful activities and participate in the state government’s skill acquisition program to contribute positively to society.

The Commissioner commended the state government and residents for their support and called for continued collaboration to ensure a safe environment for lawful activities.
