Police arrest student for faking own kidnapping, hides near Abuja

The Niger State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old student of the College of Health, Kwamba, Suleja, for allegedly faking his own kidnapping and demanding a N50 million ransom from his mother.

The suspect, identified as Moses Amarks, was said to have conspired with friends to stage the abduction in a bid to extort money from his family.

Police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, in a statement on Tuesday, said the matter was reported to the Maje Division on August 4, 2025, after the victim’s mother received a hidden-call threat claiming her son had been abducted.

“Operatives of the Division, through technical intelligence, traced the suspect to Zuba Motor Park in Abuja, where he was arrested. During interrogation, he confessed to working with one Emmanuel Moses, 22, a former student of the same school, to carry out the act,” Abiodun stated.

According to the police, Emmanuel contacted his brother, identified as Jetro, in Kaduna State, who provided a hideout in Karji village, Sabon-Tasha. The suspects allegedly stayed there for six days before Amarks resurfaced when the ransom was not paid.

The police said an investigation is ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend Jetro.
