The Nigeria Police have arrested a Port Harcourt–based medical doctor and pastor over an alleged plot to assassinate the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in what SaharaReporters described as a developing story.
According to SaharaReporters, operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team arrested Dr Tombari Joseph Gbeneol, a medical doctor and founder of Life Forte Chapel Church in Port Harcourt. The arrest is said to be linked to an alleged plan to kill Wike, a former governor of Rivers State.
Security sources told SaharaReporters that the arrest followed the interception of a phone conversation between Gbeneol and the immediate past Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr Tammy Danagogo. In the recorded conversation, both men allegedly discussed plans to bring in Israeli nationals to carry out the assassination.
The sources further claimed that the discussion included plans to approach Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for funding to execute the alleged operation. A senior security source described the content of the call as a grave national security threat, which triggered immediate action by the police.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest to SaharaReporters, saying the suspect is currently in police custody while investigations are ongoing. He, however, declined to provide further details.
SaharaReporters added that efforts are ongoing to arrest Danagogo, who is believed to have gone underground since the matter became public, as investigations into the alleged plot continue.
