The Benue State Police Command has arrested 14 suspects in connection with a violent protest in Makurdi that led to the gruesome killing of a truck driver.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, the protest, which began peacefully at the Wurukum Roundabout in the state capital, spiraled into chaos when it was hijacked by violent elements. The attackers later blocked a road in the Apir area, on the outskirts of Makurdi, and set a truck ablaze—burning the driver alive. His identity is yet to be confirmed.
The demonstration was reportedly organized in response to growing concerns over insecurity in the state. However, the situation turned tragic as criminal elements infiltrated the crowd.
In response to the escalating unrest, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, and Deputy Governor, Barrister John Ode, visited the protest site to engage with the demonstrators. Their attempt at dialogue was rebuffed, with some protesters allegedly trying to attack the deputy governor. Security operatives dispersed the crowd using smoke and water cannons. No injuries were reported in the process.
Shortly after, a splinter group believed to be linked to the earlier protest moved to Apir, intercepted a truck, and set it on fire with the driver trapped inside.
Police confirmed that 14 individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the violent act, and investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend others involved.
The command emphasized its support for lawful protests but warned that it would not condone violence or acts of destruction.
“The Benue State Command remains committed to protecting the rights of citizens to peaceful assembly, but those who choose to exploit such moments to commit crimes will face the full force of the law,” the police said.
Authorities also commended peaceful protesters who adhered to the law and reassured the public that efforts are ongoing to restore calm across the state.
