Pharmacists Must Act Against Antibiotic Resistance– Adefurin

By Our Correspondent

Pharmacists have been urged to take a proactive stance against the growing threat of antibiotic resistance.

This was emphasised by Dr Taiwo Adefurin during his keynote address at the 2024 Pharmacy Week in Akure, Ondo State.

Dr Adefurin highlighted the importance of education and advocacy in tackling this global health crisis, noting that it now claims more lives annually than road accidents.

“Antibiotic resistance is no longer just a medical issue; it is a public health emergency that we must address collectively,” he stated.

He called on pharmacists to promote responsible antibiotic use, urging them to engage in community education initiatives.

“As trusted healthcare professionals, we have a unique position to inform patients about the dangers of misusing antibiotics and the importance of adhering to prescribed treatments,” Adefurin added.

Furthermore, he stressed the need for stronger regulatory measures, saying, “We must advocate for policies that ensure the safe use of antibiotics and combat the spread of misinformation in our communities.”

The address concluded with a call to action for pharmacists to lead the charge in improving public health outcomes and safeguarding future generations from the threat of antibiotic resistance.
