A female pedestrian was killed on Sunday after being struck by a speeding vehicle near the Mosalasi Roundabout along the Ipaja area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the incident involved a black Toyota Tundra with the plate number FST 222 HV.
The vehicle reportedly lost control, left the road, and drove onto the pedestrian walkway, fatally hitting the woman, who has yet to be identified.
In a statement released by LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the accident was described as a single-vehicle crash caused by excessive speed.
“The driver, travelling at a dangerously high speed, lost control of the vehicle, which left the main road and struck a pedestrian who died on the spot,” the statement said.
After the collision, the vehicle crashed into a nearby livestock business, damaging its fence and a billboard located nearby.
Witnesses said the driver tried to escape the scene after realising what had happened.
However, LASTMA officials who responded quickly were able to apprehend him before he could flee.
He was later handed over to officers from the Gowon Estate Police Division for further investigation.
Taofiq added that the body of the deceased was handed over to the police for proper documentation and necessary procedures, while the suspect remains in custody and is being interrogated.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sadness over the incident and offered condolences to the victim’s family.
“This heartbreaking event is a stark reminder of the risks associated with reckless driving. We sympathise with the victim’s loved ones and pray they find the strength to cope with their loss,” he said.
