A prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Segun Sowunmi, has urged the party to consider bringing back Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election.
Speaking on a television interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Sowunmi stressed the importance of the PDP initiating serious discussions about Obi’s return, noting the organic support and momentum he currently enjoys.
He said, “Peter Obi, originally a PDP member and a notable figure from the South-East who felt the region was sidelined, managed to secure 6.2 million votes in the 2023 elections. After losing at the polls and at the Supreme Court, it’s time for the PDP to reflect. The next strategic move should be: ‘How do we bring Peter back?’”
Sowunmi criticized the internal issues within the PDP, including growing defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress, describing them as self-inflicted wounds that should have been addressed earlier.
“There are issues you can blame on external pressures, but persistent internal stagnation and lack of creativity must be owned by the party,” he remarked.
He also cautioned against underestimating President Bola Tinubu, saying while he may appear physically frail, his political intellect is strong. “People keep underestimating him and it backfires. It’s dangerous for my party to assume he is easy to beat.”
Sowunmi’s remarks reflect ongoing tensions and strategic considerations within the PDP as the party seeks to regain political ground.
