Tension continues to mount in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, following the mysterious disappearance of two students of the state-owned Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA), who have not been seen for over two weeks.
The missing students have been identified as Andrel Okah, a 200-level student in the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts, and John Abba, a 200-level student in the Department of Economics, Faculty of Agriculture.
Fellow students, visibly disturbed by the development, say the duo have missed classes and all academic engagements without any form of communication. Several efforts to contact them via their mobile phones have proven unsuccessful.
A student, who identified himself as Ajibola, told journalists that their disappearance has triggered serious concern across campus.
“It’s been over two weeks since they’ve been seen on campus. We’ve tried everything possible to reach them, but their lines are switched off. We’ve also reported the situation to the school authorities and the police, but there has been no concrete result,” he said.
“They are very close friends, and no one knows if this is a case of kidnapping or something else. We were only told to remain calm, and someone even suggested they may have traveled for a vacation. But their sudden disappearance doesn’t sit well with any of us. We are seriously worried.”
Efforts to reach the university’s spokesperson, Mr. Victor Akinpelumi, were unsuccessful as calls and messages went unanswered at the time of filing this report.
However, speaking in confidence, a senior management official of the institution confirmed the matter had been escalated to law enforcement authorities. He also hinted that the university is not ruling out possible links to questionable campus activities.
“The university management is aware of the case, but we are suspecting a lot of developments relating to the missing students,” the official disclosed.
“You would agree with me that there are a lot of unwholesome activities surrounding some of these students when on campus. So, we are in touch with the police on the matter to unravel what exactly could have led to this disappearance—especially as their colleagues themselves are expressing doubts about their purported whereabouts.”
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, SP Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed that the case is under investigation.
“Yes, the matter has been reported to us, and our officers are investigating it. We are working closely with the university management to determine what happened,” Olayinka said.
As the days go by without any lead, anxiety grows within the AAUA community and beyond, with students and parents calling for urgent and transparent efforts to ensure the safe return of the missing undergraduates.
