Panic as Gunshots Disrupt Edo Governorship Tribunal

Gunshots near the Edo Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Benin City on Wednesday morning caused chaos, forcing lawyers, politicians, and reporters to flee for safety.

The shootings occurred close to the tribunal at the Edo High Court Complex on Sapele Road.

Security personnel quickly intervened, restoring order and enabling the tribunal proceedings to continue.

The tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi and two other members, is hearing cases related to the disputed September 2024 governorship election, which saw Senator Monday Okpebholo of the APC declared winner, The Nation reports .

Edo APC Chairman Jarret Tenebe condemned the violence, calling it unacceptable and urging for justice against those responsible.

Seven political parties, including the PDP, SDP, and ZLP, have filed petitions challenging the election outcome.
