Workers at five tertiary institutions in Oyo State have started an indefinite strike due to unresolved salary issues, including the non-payment of the minimum wage.
The affected institutions are The Polytechnic, Ibadan; The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki; Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa; Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora; and Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC), which represents over 15 staff unions from these schools, made the announcement on Monday, shortly after exams began at The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
The strike led to the closure of the institutions.
JAC explained that the strike was necessary to push the state government to meet its obligations to the workers.
The workers have been demanding the implementation of the 25/35% salary increase, which has been in place for other institutions since January 2024, and the new minimum wage for those in the Polytechnic and College of Education sectors.
Despite several meetings with the management, the issues remain unresolved, forcing the unions to take this step.
