Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Friday declared that land grabbers in the state will face strict legal consequences.
The announcement was made during a stakeholder engagement session at the University of Ibadan, where the governor revealed the formation of the Anti-Land Grabbing Agency.
The new law aims to prevent the illegal seizure of property, treating it as a criminal offense.
This move is part of a broader effort to tackle socio-economic challenges in the region through the Rule of Law Enforcement Authority and other government programs.
Makinde’s deputy, Adebayo Lawal, expressed support for these measures, which also include addressing issues like illegal cattle grazing in public spaces.
The governor stressed the importance of protecting citizens’ property rights, warning that forcefully occupying land would no longer be tolerated.
Makinde also emphasized that these actions are part of his broader strategy to improve governance and strengthen key institutions, including the newly established OYMASED, focused on restoring Yoruba values and promoting economic development, Punch reports.
At the event, officials highlighted the importance of upholding law and order, with speakers touching on various social issues such as crowd control and drug abuse.
The gathering brought together legal experts, traditional leaders, and government representatives to discuss these pressing matters.
