Oyo Assembly suspends LG chairman indefinitely

The Oyo State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended Emmanuel Adedokun, the chairman of Saki East Local Government, following multiple allegations leveled against him.

During its plenary session on Tuesday, the House reviewed a petition submitted by stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the local government area, accusing Adedokun of misconduct within the party, religious intolerance, and mismanagement of funds.

The petition also questioned the handling of certain assets, such as bulldozers, and raised concerns about the alleged deduction of 10 percent from the salaries of political appointees.

Expressing their grievances, the petitioners stated, “We appreciate Governor Seyi Makinde’s efforts to expand our party by integrating members from other political groups. However, in our case, the individual benefiting from this goodwill has instead weakened the party to advance the interests of his former political faction.

“The local government’s bulldozer has been missing since he took office, with no explanation or financial remittance to the council. Given these concerns, we urge intervention to protect our party and safeguard the interests of our dedicated leaders and elders who have worked tirelessly for its progress.”

Following deliberations, the House ruled that Vice Chairman Rasaq Adeyemi should assume leadership of the local government in an acting capacity. Additionally, the Secretary to the Local Government (SLG) was instructed to take over as acting vice-chairman.

The Assembly also mandated its Standing Committee on Local Governments, Chieftaincy Matters, and State Honours to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations and report its findings accordingly.
