More than 90 individuals have lost their lives following a tragic boat capsizing incident off Mozambique’s northern coast on Sunday, authorities have confirmed.
Reports from local media indicate that the passengers onboard the vessel were fleeing from a cholera outbreak, making their journey from Lunga to Mozambique Island, situated off the coast of Nampula.
According to a representative of the island administration speaking to STV television station, the fishing boat was designed to accommodate a maximum of 100 people. However, it was overloaded with around 130 individuals.
The AIM news agency, citing a maritime authority representative, suggested that the vessel likely succumbed to rough seas, leading to its tragic wreck.
Mozambique is grappling with its most significant cholera outbreak in the past 25 years, as highlighted by the UN’s children’s relief organization, UNICEF.
Since the outbreak began in September 2022, more than 37,000 cases have been reported.
