Hon. Faruk Ayatu, Chairman of Sabuwa Local Government Area in Katsina State, has confirmed the release of over 1,000 people previously held captive by bandits.
According to Afripost, Speaking to journalists in Funtua on Monday, Ayatu highlighted that Sabuwa remains one of the most affected areas in the state due to its proximity to bandit hideouts along the borders of Kaduna, Niger, Zamfara, and Kebbi states.
While acknowledging a reduction in attacks following intensified security measures, he expressed concern over a recent surge in violence, which he attributed to ongoing negotiations between bandits and authorities in neighboring Kaduna State.
“The bandits are trying to pressure us into negotiations on their terms, threatening even more deadly attacks if we refuse,” he said.
Ayatu reaffirmed the local government’s stance against negotiating with criminal groups, arguing that such agreements are often unreliable since armed groups rarely surrender their weapons.
He also suggested that bandits are particularly hostile toward Katsina residents because Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has refused to engage in peace talks with them.
According to Ayatu, some of the 1,000 freed individuals were released after ransoms were paid, while others were let go voluntarily. However, around 70 people remain in captivity.
He stressed that a lasting solution to banditry requires a coordinated approach among all North-West governors.
Additionally, Ayatu praised Governor Radda for his dedication to campaign promises, particularly in education, healthcare, agriculture, and water supply.
Despite the recent releases, security concerns persist, with residents urging sustained military action to tackle the ongoing threat of banditry in the region.
