Osun Police arrest chief for attempted murder

The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Chief Gbenga Ajibade over an alleged attempted murder in Ilesa, Osun State.

Police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed the arrest in a statement on Thursday, noting that investigations into the incident were ongoing. He assured residents that justice would be served and urged the public to remain calm.

The case, which has stirred outrage in the community, involves a 25-year-old man identified as Ebenezer, who was accused of stealing two pieces of maize from Chief Ajibade’s farm in the Ireti Ayo area of Ilesa. A video obtained by News men showed the suspect forcing the young man to drink a poisonous substance.

According to reports, the shocking incident led to the suspension of Chief Ajibade from the Ijesa Sports Club, where he serves as President. The club’s Director of Social and Publicity, Kenneth Opebiyi, announced the suspension on Wednesday, August 7, 2025, citing the severity of the allegations.

The case took an even more tragic turn when Ebenezer’s father, upon receiving false information that his son had died from the poisoning, collapsed and died from shock. However, Ojelabi clarified that the victim survived after receiving medical attention.

“Doctors at Wesley Guild Hospital stabilised Ebenezer. He did not die, contrary to what was told to his father,” Ojelabi stated.

He added that police operatives traced and arrested Chief Ajibade in his hometown of Ipetu Ijesa before transferring him to Osogbo for further investigation and possible prosecution.

“The suspect is currently in custody, and we are conducting thorough investigations into the circumstances of the incident,” the police spokesperson said, warning members of the public against taking laws into their own hands.
